Análisis del Sistema de Salud de Costa Rica: Los Éxitos y Desafíos Asociados a un Sistema Nacional de Salud

I created this research paper in Spanish for my Technical Spanish for Health Management Professions class. My paper focused on analyzing Costa Rica’s healthcare system, specifically focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of the healthcare model used by the country. This paper greatly improved my linguistic skills because I had to learn and effectively apply technical terms in Spanish. My interpreting skills also improved by reading research studies with complex Spanish medical terminology and synthesizing material from different sources in advanced Spanish. As someone pursuing a career in public health, these linguistic skills will help me communicate with diverse populations and translate documents in Spanish related to healthcare systems and management.

Artículo Científico (SPAN 4190-Salud y La Comunidad Hispana)

I wrote this research paper in Spanish for my Health and the Hispanic Community class. Through this paper, I analyzed how social determinants of health affect the prevalence of diabetes in the Latino population of the United States through the lens of the socio-ecological model. This paper strengthened my linguistic skills and ability to use specialized public health terminology in Spanish. Completing this project also allowed me to develop a deeper cultural understanding of health issues facing the Latino population in the United States. This gave me a new perspective on contemporary health issues. This paper improved my confidence in communicating in Spanish because I learned and applied technical medical Spanish over the course of a semester that I will use in my professional career.

Manage, Learn, Live: Diabetes Management Program

I developed this project for my Health Promotion Program Planning class, creatively developing a program proposal for a Medicare-based diabetes management program in rural areas of South Carolina. Through this semester-long project, I constructed every piece of a professional program proposal, from background research to a detailed intervention and evaluation strategy. I encountered many challenges while making this program due to its size and complexity, such as ensuring continuity and creating innovative solutions to managing diabetes in rural areas. I overcame these challenges with support from my program partner and professor, as well as by allocating adequate time to this project. I greatly strengthened my critical thinking and research skills by creating evidence-based educational materials, skill-building exercises, and monitoring strategies based on health behavior theories. These skills I developed will help me understand the socioeconomic challenges faced by different communities, especially rural communities, and how to create programs that uniquely address these challenges.

Solving SDG 3 in the Philippines

This artifact is a research paper on health in the Philippines that I wrote for my Global Health class, in which I analyzed barriers and solutions to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. This paper examined how historical colonization, educational inequities, and archipelagic isolation contribute to health disparities in the Philippines, especially between urban and rural areas. This paper deepened my understanding of global health differences and how the social determinants of health influence every aspect of a person’s health and well-being. I strengthened my research skills by synthesizing peer-reviewed literature to make broader connections between social determinants and health outcomes in the Philippines. This experience prepared me to advocate for health equity by immersing me in the healthcare system of a different country.

Actores Clave en la Guerra Civil Española: su Papel y Legado

I wrote this research paper for my The Hispanic World: Spain class. This paper analyzed key actors in the Spanish Civil War and their historical and cultural legacy. A goal was to seek to highlight the less recognized people that fought in the Spanish Civil War including women, foreign powers, and regional groups such as the Catalans and the Basques. This paper deepened my understanding of how history and ideology shape collective experiences and the cultural identity of a country. Through examining marginalized groups such as women and regional minorities, I developed greater empathy and critical thinking skills. These skills will carry over into my career in health because I have a deeper understanding of certain cultural factors and the importance of understanding peoples’ lived experiences.

The Effects of Autism and ADHD Portrayal in the Media on Public Perception

I wrote this research paper for my Medical Anthropology class. This paper analyzed how autism and ADHD are portrayed in the media in the United States and how these portrayals influence public perception of neurodiversity. I utilized anthropological frameworks to understand stigma, lived experiences, and the importance of representation. Through this project, I gained insight into neurodivergent perspectives and the power of the media. I also developed a deeper understanding of how cultural narratives influence how patients perceive themselves and clinical interactions. Through this, I strengthened my cultural humility and empathy, especially in regard to hidden disabilities. As I go into the field of public health, I now have a better ability to listen actively, be culturally aware, and communicate competently with neurodivergent populations.
